I CREATED A FREE FOOD PANTRY ON MY STREET
When systems crash and burn, the free economy sparks to life—fast moving, smart, and built on the simple fact that we’re all we’ve got. If we don’t take care of each other, who will?
The Little Free Food Pantry Project
A MUTUAL AID PROJECT
Created by VAN GOGH DESIGN
2020- 2023
For years, I had imagined and sketched out the idea of a public kiosk of some kind, where neighbors could freely exchange shelf stable food and hygiene products. So, just before the 2020 election, we designed and installed a free food pantry on Rose Street, with our neighbors' blessing.
I made a commitment to donate a percentage of my income from design projects to the pantry so I bought food every week for it. As the project gained momentum, I formed partnerships with local businesses and organizations like ACME Bakery and the Berkeley Food Pantry, who generously provided TONS of food to us.
In the first year, we were both amazed at seeing the Free Economy at work. People in cars would pull up to drop off bags of food. Our neighbors shared food, and took food from it. There was a steady flow of food, and the response we got from our community was positive overall.
The local paper (Berkeleyside) even wrote an article about what we were doing. That was cool! After getting some press, I reached out to the Berkeley Free Clinic and they were great to work with. If you don't know about them, look them up. They have been around since 1969 offering free health care.
I loved designing the signage and print materials for the food pantry. I met so many of my neighbors while I was stocking it and cleaning it daily. There were so many positive things about it that outweighed the parts that were hard.
